BOMA Award

The Building Owners and Managers Association’s (BOMA) award for Building Energy Reduction was received by Avidan Management, owners and managers of industrial and commercial real estate. 145 Talmadge Road is a 656,000 sq. ft. warehouse and office complex in Edison, New Jersey. The reduction plan consisted of a solar project consisting of 17,745 solar panels; along with an energy reduction plan consisting of a 20,000 cfm, BPE Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) system; high speed doors for refrigerated and freezer areas; controls for a 1,222 ton refrigeration plant; and additional energy reduction measures that were designed by Ha glid Engineering & Associates, Inc.  This resulted in the building being successfully retrofitted to become a power producing facility on peak summer days. It was completed in April 2011, making it the largest roof-top mounted installation in the country at the time.

EBie Award

145 Talmadge Rd. Edison, NJ was also nominated for an EBie award. On June 28th, Mr. Haglid received the award from the USGBC. This is an award presented by the Urban Green Council to those who have made a remarkable environmental improvement to existing buildings. 145 Talmadge was able to be Net Zero, or net power producing on very hot summer days, even with a 1,222 ton refrigeration plant, by recovering British Thermal Units (Btu) through energy recovery supplied by BPE along with a host of other energy reduction plans.  This incorporated with a solar panel array ac tually allowed this massive industrial complex to be Net Zero, or net power producing.

Existing Buildings account for more than a third of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions and 85 percent are expected to remain in use in 2030 so working towards making them sustainable is extremely important for future generations. Haglid Engineering & Associates was 1 of 14 finalists in a competition that started with 67 entries. Nominated in the “Reformed Gas Guzzler” category, the Talmadge Project is being recognized for having one of the highest percentages of energy savings!

Hosted by the Urban Green Council, USGBC New York, the EBies™ is an annual award ceremony that recognizes significant increased environmental performance in existing buildings among building operators, facilities managers, owners, engineers, retro-comissioning agents, and other professionals who conceived and implemented the work.  Focus areas include energy, water, operations, lighting, landscaping, as well as effective energy use education.  A complete list of the EBie Award categories can be found at www.Ebies.org.  Entries for these awards were accepted for projects anywhere in the continental United States via the EBies website.  An independent EBie Award Jury representing leading owners, building operators, designers, academia, and government selected the finalists and winners.

Why the EBies?  There are already important awards that recognize sustainable design in new buildings.  But from an environmental standpoint, the biggest impact lies in improving existing buildings, which comprise 95 percent of America’s building stock.  Until the EBies, there was virtually no recognition for this critical sector.  For each winning entry, Urban Green Council will award an EBie to the individual most responsible for making the project happen, as well as recognize his or her key team members.

This year’s EBie awards, the 1st Annual Ceremony, was held at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City on June 28th.

PRESS RELEASE - Urban Green Council, USGBC New York
Urban Green Council Announces the EBies

New Awards for Performance in Existing Buildings

NEW YORK, January 23, 2012 - Urban Green Council, USGBC New York, today announced the EBie Awards™, a new nationwide juried competition that celebrates performance improvements in Existing Buildings (hence the EBies), and the people who made them happen. Their work is likely to have been done on a shoestring budget and needed great tenacity and conviction.

Who are these unsung heroes? The EBies™ recognize significant increased environmental performance in existing buildings among building operators, facilities managers, owners, engineers, retro-commissioning agents and other professionals who conceived and implemented the work. Focus areas include energy, water, operations, lighting and landscaping as well as effective energy use education. A complete list of EBie Award categories is here.

Why the EBies? There are already important awards that recognize sustainable design in new buildings. But from an environmental standpoint, the biggest impact lies in improving existing buildings, which comprise 95 percent of America's building stock. Until the EBies, there was virtually no recognition for this critical sector.

"Nearly 90% of the buildings that will support our communities in 2030 are already standing; in order to make an impact on our energy usage profile we need to focus on existing buildings. The EBies are a perfect way to acknowledge the successes by practitioners in the field who are leading the way to a more energy-efficient future."
